I think someone needs to invent a way to freeze or slow down time, as it’s whizzing by way too fast! The first two weeks of my daughter’s junior year in high school seem to have zoomed by! So far, she seems to have gotten a running start and is quite content…but, I cannot say I have felt the same way. Yesterday, I received a timeline of all the things she needs to start working on now to make her transition to college a smooth one, later on. And, it hit me – 2 years! 2 years and she will be off!
It’s been her and I for awhile and I have watched and nudged her through her many changes as she figures herself out. This year, I’ve noticed that she doesn’t wear her grandpa’s t-shirts and basketball shorts as much; instead, she seems to be dressing in jeans that are her size and t-shirts she actually selected from the women’s section.
She often tells me that some of the boys she knows flirt with her when she does’t wear her grandpa’s t-shirts and, while I try to stay calm on the outside, my inner Brian Mills surfaces, and I start checking up on these kids’ social media profiles. When I ask her if she likes any of them, she looks at me and bursts out laughing and says: “mom, none of these boys compare to my jackalope boyfriend! None of them have Taylor Lautner’s looks and a personality that I find just as stunning, so don’t worry!”
The word “jackalope” was introduced to us in church, as a mythical animal that was a jackrabbit with antelope horns – much like Nessie and the abominable snowman. Ever since, my daughter has thrown that word around in describing whatever that she deems unreal – whether that be a boyfriend or tasty store bought gluten free muffins.
So, for her, I made these homemade, cheesy chive and sausage muffins for breakast! They are not rubbery or dry or chewy. Instead, they are cheesy and light and filled with chives and Johnsonville® sausage – and she thinks they are made with her favorite gluten-full flour!
