You might be all cookied out after the Holidays, but, please don’t pass these cookies by. You see, these one-bowl, Orange Chocolate Chip Protein Cookies are gluten free, butter-free, tasty little morsels that pack a major taste punch with the combination of chocolate chips and orange zest!
Happy, Happy New Year Y’all! Here’s hoping 2017 is off to a wonderful start for ya!
I’ve been taking it easy in my neck of the interwebs, trying to recuperate from all the binging I indulged in during that last week of 2016! You see, instead of waiting till Thanksgiving to carry out my painting tradition, I figured I’d wage war on my walls and binge-paint with the hopes of a freshly painted home for the new year!
And binge-paint I did! I slung paint onto the walls of my guest room, my bedroom, the hallways and my kitchen and started off 2017 being thankful for the re-acquaintances I had made with those parts of my arms and back that I’d forgotten about!
And I’m thinking all that binging and slinging took it’s toll because just as I was enjoying the smell of my freshly painted walls, some nasty bug decided to invade my nostrils and take me down!
Now, I’m one of those zany people that don’t like to admit to being sick, so I will just say that while I was taken-down, I decided to engage in some sick-baking or, taken-down baking!
Without being able to smell or taste anything, sick-baking can be pretty darn daunting. But, I wanted to make the most of my day and not just lie around. My first sick-bake were a batch of orange and banana chip protein cookies. Or, at least, that’s what I thought they were going to be when I put them in the oven. What I pulled out were these dome shaped, poofed-up, thingies – kind of a cross between a scone and a biscuit or something (if you want a laugh, you can check these out here). My daughter and I played catch with those before she decided to use them to play fetch with the dogs! Hmmm….
My second attempt were some orange almond muffins that forgot to poof-up!
Not wanting to go to bed a total failure, I figured I would make one last attempt at some Orange Chocolate Chip Protein Cookies loaded up with gluten-free ground up oats, flaxseed and Premier Protein Vanilla Protein Powder. Like I said before, I couldn’t smell these at all or taste them – but, right as I was about to pull these out of the oven, my daughter stopped her homework to offer to help me!
Which means only one thing – she thought these smelled good enough to risk burning her tongue on, while trying to help me by taste testing them! And taste test them she did. I made 10 and you see how many I have here in my pictures. In her words not mine, “these are good, so good, you fooled me, I didn’t think they were healthy at all!” And, these had the perfect amount of “poof” too!
Aaaannnnnd…am hoping that convinces you to whip up a batch of these and binge on them for breakfast or as a snack – mostly guilt free of course!

Orange Chocolate Chip Protein Cookies
- 1/4 cup Premier Protein Vanilla Protein Powder
- 1/2 cup quick cooking oats ground up 9I use my blender to grind up a batch of quick oats and keep it on hand to use in recipes.
- 1/4 cup ground up flaxseed
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 cup coconut sugar
- 1/4 cup coconut oil I did not melt it, just used it in it's semi-sold state
- 1 egg
- pinch of salt
- 1/4 teaspoon fresh orange zest
- 1/4 cup chocolate chips I used milk chocolate but semi sweet can also be used
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees
- Place the Premier Protein Vanilla Protein Powder, oats, flax, baking soda, coconut sugar and salt in a bowl and mix them up
- Then add in the coconut oil, the egg and orange zest and chocolate chips and mix well.
- Divide and shape into 8 cookies
- Place them on a parchment lined baking tray about an inch apart and bake for 9-10 minutes
- Let cool and enjoy.
