Savory Sweet Potato Pancakes

Savory-sweet-potato-pancakes

Between you and me – is there something that you adore – but you don’t crave?

Even though you love it, you can do without it, but the moment you get to experience it – you cannot seem to get enough?

For example let’s take chocolate cake, you might adore it – but you manage to convince yourself you don’t need it for breakfast, lunch and dinner – you might even make it many months without tasting a sliver – but then you end up with a slice on your plate – and you realize what true love is! Okay so maybe I shouldn’t go that far – but, you get my drift?

Well, this past weekend, my “chocolate cake” happened to be “Friday Night Lights” (the TV series)!

Forever one who always seems to miss the bandwagon, I didn’t watch Friday Night Lights when it first came out in 2006. But, over the last couple of months, my daughter and I worked our way through all five seasons – with a marathon vegging out session this past weekend which resulted in us finishing the whole series! I don’t believe it took us 2 months to finish 76 episodes (and here I was thinking I didn’t even like watching TV)!

My daughter and I couldn’t help but root for the characters through their struggles and cheer them on through their triumphs – both on and off the field. There were so many episodes that sparked feverish discussions between my daughter and I; the teen daughter rebelling; the brother who went to jail for a crime his brother committed just so his brother could stay and be a dad to his son; the gifted and cocky player who was humbled before he landed a scholarship; the player who made a life for himself when all hope seemed to be lost after a horrible accident…if you have watched this series – you know the heart and depth of the scenarios in it – if you haven’t, I would highly recommend it – but maybe not finishing the whole series in 2 months! 🙂

Marathon vegging out sessions need fuel – and that’s where these pancakes come into play. These savory sweet potato pancakes were our brunch –and– kept chocolate cake off our minds through out our marathon TV-viewing.

Made with sweet potatoes and chick pea flour – these are gluten free. And flavored with garlic, onion and cumin – these are definitely not taste free! We had ours with a side of date and tamarind chutney.

  4. I could eat up the whole stack.
Sweet Potato has been my new favorite and yet another great idea from you my dear. Looks delicious.
Friday Night Lights, will surely check it out. I was so hooked onto Pretty Little Liars(guilty pleasure).
As I read your post, kept thinking that there are so many things I love, it’s not even fair. I need to hold onto my cravings.:).
Enjoy your weekend with your girl.

  5. I love these gluten free savory pancakes! In general, I love savory breakfasts, and I always have to explain myself to others when I eat regular pancakes or crepes plain, without regular maple syrup or other sweetener. I just like my pancakes as savory as they can get! 🙂

  6. Everything looks delicious as always but nothing like the sweet potato pancakes. I could eat the whole stack by myself. 🙂

  7. These look like they have a brilliant texture! And I haven’t watched Friday Night Lights but will keep it in mind. BTW Do you know that you have an ad that autoplays Shashi?

  8. These pancakes look amazing! I love anything that involves sweet potatoes. I’ve never been much of a tv or movie watcher either. Always feel like I’m wasting time. BUT my daughter has taken a liking to watching things with me and I love it because I get to learn so much about her through the way she reacts to things in the movie or tv show we’re watching.

  9. kitchenriffs says:

We really don’t watch much TV, but I’ve heard that’s an awfully good program. Should probably check it out. And I should definitely check out these pancakes! Love sweet potatoes, and really like the idea of making them with chickpea flour. Super recipe — thanks.

  10. cheri says:

Hi Shashi, these look so delicious, I’ve made sweet potato oatmeal but not pancakes, I bet these are fantastic!

  11. Tara says:

These look so dense and delicious! My food would definitely be brownies. Half an hour ago I had my first brownie in maybe six months, and am seriously wondering what I was waiting for!

  12. Joanne says:

The.Boy and I are currently watching The Blacklist at breakneck speed, but maybe I should recommend Friday Night Lights as our next show. Sounds awesome! Also, I am so into the fact that these are savory. Such a fun twist!

  13. Howie says:

Thanks for mentioning FBP. i’m still thinking about getting the membership, maybe now is the time 😉

  14. mjskit says:

I love Friday Nights Lights! I watched it when it first came out, but I’ve been considering going back and watching it again. I can see how it stimulated quite a bit of discussion between you and your teenage daughter. Love those pancakes! I’ve had pumpkin pancakes, but I can see these as more savory and less sweet.

  15. I’ve thought about signing up for FB Pro – after your rave reviews, I’ll have to give it another look! Love these pancakes, btw! Are they still savory if I douse them in maple syrup? Good. I’m glad you agree! 😉 Pinned!

  16. I’ve never really tried savory pancakes but DUDE I think I need to give it a shot… Roll some MEAT up in one! ha ha ha!

  17. I absolutely LOVE savory pancakes and this stack looks amazing!!!!!! Date and tamarind chutney is my favorite ever and I love this combination!

  18. Right now I’m all about the pancakes so this post is singing sweet hellos to me! These look great!

  19. Ashley says:

So I have never seen Friday Night Lights … everyone keeps telling me to watch it and I just never get around to it! Now you have me rethinking this… hmmmm.

And I LOVE the sound of these pancakes! I’m such a sucker for savory pancakes and with sweet potatoes?? Even better!

  20. Kim says:

I love that series!! I think it is because the movie (Friday Night Lights) takes place in many of the places I competed in track!!!

    • Shashi says:

I remember you mentioning that you used to run through all those places the movie was filmed in! I loved it because o the story lines – but my daughter wants to be everywhere Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) was while filming – I keep telling her she needs to stick to boys around her age as he is close to my age and old enough to be her dad! GAH!

  21. Oh I do love a good veg-out! And yes, you do need fuel for them. And what could be better than these healthy pancakes? I love the way you weave healthy unusual ingredients into your baked things, Shashi!

    • Shashi says:

Thanks so much Helen – I have been on a mission to get my daughter to eat healthier – hence the weaving in of healthy ingredients into my treats 🙂

  22. genevieve y says:

I’ve never seen Friday Night Lights, but I will if it means I can have the same munchies as you… these sweet potato pancakes sound yummy! Love that you used chickpea flour and paired it with chutney for a sweet and savoury treat!

  23. MMMMM…delicious! Love that these are savoury and with that chutney, yummy!! I took care of my leftover sweet potato casserole today…repurposed. I still have mashed potatoes and I was going to do this very thing with them! Well, more like potato cakes…we’ll see how they turn out.
    Hope you are well. xx

    • Shashi says:

Thank you so much Nazneen – I am well (I took a week or so off) and I hope you are too – I hope you post your sweet potato pancakes – I adore potato cakes – I used to make them but these days I cannot seem to duplicate them just right – so I cannot wait to be inspired by yours! xx’s

  24. Kelly says:

Love the sound of your marathon vegging out sessions with your daughter 🙂 Snacking on these savory sweet potato pancakes are such a delicious idea too! They look amazing!

    • Shashi says:

Thanks so much Sweet Kelly – I was in bad need of some major veggin out time – it sure was good for my soul 🙂 Hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving, my friend.

  25. Those pancakes look fantastic, Shashi! Beautiful photos too… I’m cracking up that you and your daughter have been marathoning Friday Night Lights – definitely addictive.

    • Shashi says:

Thanks Marissa – good gosh – in these last 2 months, I have watched an insane amount of TV – I think Friday Night Lights is by far one of the best shows I have seen – great story line and the eye candy ain’t too bad either 😉

  26. realfoodbydad says:

Why have I never thought of this, such a great idea. These look amazing, Shashi!

  27. ifailedfran says:

I’ve had a lot of pancakes and waffles lately, but none that were savory. This would be an excellent change of pace! Kind of like a hash brown maybe? Yum!

    • Shashi says:

If these did not have any chick pea flour or almond milk in them, they would probably taste like a sweet potato hash brown – though I cannot say I have ever had a sweet potato hash brown-have you? Am curious as I just Googled to see if Waffle house had ’em and couldn’t find them – now my curiosity is piqued!
      Btw – thanks Chris!

  28. I should make pancakes oftener. These look great with sweet potatoes.

  29. blahnikbaker says:

I know the feeling of begging out!! This weekend it was the original Law and Order for me! Wish I had these pancakes then to start the day 🙂

    • Shashi says:

It’s been awhile since I saw an episode of the original Law and Order – maybe this needs to be on my Netflix queue next? 🙂
      Thanks so much Zainab!

  30. Yay for chickpea flour! I think it makes pancakes so fluffy!

  31. YUM, these sounds great! I want to experiment more with chickpea flour so this might be the perfect recipe 🙂 Thanks for sharing!!

  32. I never watched the Friday Night Light series either, but I’m glad you mentioned that because my son and I are always looking for TV series to watch together. Love the idea by the way of savory pancakes – these look awesome!

    • Shashi says:

Thanks so much Jeanette! I would definitely recommend this for you and your son – there are some real life topics that are dealt with on this show which lead my daughter and I to have some pretty in depth conversations.

  33. I’m notorious for missing bandwagons… especially when it comes to TV shows. Heck, I still haven’t watched Lost or Dexter despite the fact that both have been on my to-do list for… years? 😆 And it’s the same with food! There are certain things (soup and pancakes come to mind) that I won’t bother eating for months and months, randomly make them, and then wonder why I don’t make them more often. These look brilliant, Shashi! Happy Monday to you! <3

    • Shashi says:

I am glad I am not the only one! I think we need to start another bandwagon -one that leaves the station about 6 years after the first one! And maybe we can deck it out with ALL the chocolate and pancakes and stir fries!!! yeah!? 🙂
Btw – thanks oodles lovely! xx

  34. My “chocolate cake” is definitely asparagus. When it’s crisp and perfectly steamed, with just a touch of lemon juice and sea salt, it’s like freaking candy!! I could eat it by the bushel full!

OK, so please please PLEASE send me an email or shoot me a FB message about Food Blogger Pro, because I can’t figure out why a group of videos and a chat forum are worth spending that much money every year. I trust you, so help me out here….

    • Shashi says:

Asparagus you say? I have a coworker who is addicted to green beans – though she isn’t picky about how they are cooked – she will eat ’em boiled, steamed, fried, fresh, frozen, canned, it doesn’t matter – I keep thinking she is gonna turn green one day! Then we will know how the hulk got his color! 😉

  35. Friday Night Lights=BEST.SHOW.EVER. I am going to finish the final season over Christmas, and I cannot wait! Those sweet potato pancakes look delicious, and I can’t wait to pin this recipe! :)-Ashley

    • Shashi says:

I couldn’t agree more “Friday Night Lights=BEST.SHOW.EVER.”!!! Nothing quite like it!!! EVER!!! Oooh that Final season was so full of uncertainty and twists and turns…cannot wait for you to watch it!
      And thanks Ashley!

  36. spicedblog says:

I never got into Friday Night Lights, but we definitely know all about vegging out and watching a marathon of reruns. For us, it’s typically Law and Order: SVU, although Game of Thrones may need to be rewatched again before the new season comes out in the Spring. That’s the best part about the holidays…oh, and savory pancakes are the other best part of the holidays. We have a bunch of leftover sweet potatoes downstairs, and I think I need to make these ASAP. Unless you want to try and send me some, of course. Haha! 😉

    • Shashi says:

Haha – I just dropped by my post office and was extra nice to the mailman (on my end) so be on the lookout for your parcel – though that mailman on your end is the questionable one!
I used to watch Law and Order SVU till they got rid of Christopher Meloni (Stabler) – am thinking maybe I need to catch up with where I let off…yes – wedging out in front of the telly is most definitely one of my favorite parts of the holidays!

      • spicedblog says:

Eh, SVU isn’t nearly as good now that Stabler is gone. Cragen and Munch have also moved on. The newer characters are still good…but it’s just not quite the same. I’d still suggest catching up over the holidays, though! I hear the reruns go well with sweet potato pancakes.

        • Shashi says:

Cragen and Munch have gone too??? Did anyone replace Cragen?? Now I am curious indeed…
          Thanks David! 🙂

          • spicedblog says:

They moved Olivia into Cragen’s role. I was really hoping they would bring in some superstar actor…but nope. Olivia is ok there, but she was pretty much the only one left of the original cast. Well, Olivia and Finn. And Finn would’ve been a terrible captain!

          • Shashi says:

Ha- you are right – Finn would’ve been a terrible captain indeed! I just added SVU to my NetFlix queue for the holidays – Olivia as Cragen is gonna take some getting used to…

  37. SAVORY PANCAKES?! You know I love my pancakes, so I must try this!!
Love how sweet potatoes make pancakes so creamy! Pinned!
    P,s I posted pancakes today too…BRAIN LINK!

    • Shashi says:

Haha – I saw them apple crisp pancakes you posted – Brain link indeed – or psychic or psycho…wait – let’s go with “pychic brain link” cuase psycho brain link reminds me of Frankenstein – though have you seen the new one with Aaron Eckhart? I went off on a total tangent I know – so back to pancakes – thanks lady! xxs!

  38. OK my friend, you and I should meet and discuss “Friday Night Lights” for hours. Who am I kidding? Days!
I’ll make coffee but you’ll have to bring some of those awesmazing sweet potato pancakes. Do we have a deal?

    • Shashi says:

Mike – Friday Night Lights is now one of my all time favorite shows – wait – IT is my ONLY all time favorite television show – I don’t believe it only lasted 5 seasons!!! So many possibilities and questions… I mean do Tim and Tara get back together? does Lyla come back? Does Tim build on his land? What about Landry? Smash? How does Coach do in his new job? What about his youngest? What happens to Buddy? Matt & Julie?
Only problem with Friday Night Lights is it’s hard finding something to get hoked on after watching it!

  39. Jessie says:

I’m all for savory breakfasts and these look awesome. I love that their even fluffy.. not just the boring ole flat pancakes that I see from time to time on other blogs.

  40. Pancakes made from sweet potato? I love that sound of that Shashi! 😀

  41. Binge watching TV=my fav. I’m currently making my way through Mad Men and loving it! One thing I love but could do without until I have it are pancakes!! I rarely make them but die of happiness the times when I do have them.

    • Shashi says:

I blame the cold weather – I think it’s the reason I wanna stay indoors and WEDGE OUT!
If only someone would invent an automatic pancake maker – right? Wait – don’t tell me if someone did and I missed THAT bandwagon too!

  42. hotlyspiced says:

What great pancakes. I have never had pancakes with sweet potato but these look healthy and very filling xx

  43. mihrank says:

that is so delicious and Yummy – This is a great dish in Middle East!
