This lightly crispy Maple Chili Tofu is a delightful blend of sweet and spicy. This plant-based recipe makes for a light and tasty side dish.

Ingredients

  • 1 block extra firm tofu
  • 3 tbs maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp chili flakes
  • 1 tsp arrowroot powder
  • 1 tsp coriander
  • 1 clove garlic peeled grated
  • 2-3 tbsp oil for sautéing

Instructions

  • Remove the tofu from the container. Then, drain as much of the liquid from it. This can be done by: 1) wrapping the tofu in paper towels and squeezing the liquid out, and repeating this process with dry paper towels until the tofu was as dry as possible. Or, 2) by wrapping the tofu in a kitchen towel or two and placing a heavy pan over it, so the liquid seeps out.
  • Once the tofu is as dry as possible, cut it into bite-sized cubes. You can do this by cutting into thirds depth-wise and fourths length-wise.
  • Then, add the maple syrup, chili flakes, coriander, arrowroot powder into a bowl. Then, remove the skin of the piece of garlic and, using a grater, grate it into the bowl with the rest of the ingredients. Mix all the ingredients together well.
  • Add the cut-up tofu into the bowl with the rest of the ingredients and toss well.
  • Then, set a heavy bottom pan onto a stove with the flame set onto medium heat.
  • Add the oil to the pan and swirl it around.
  • Then add in the spiced tofu and let sauté for about 5 minutes. Then, using a spatula, gently flip the tofu pieces over, so they can crisp on another side. Repeat this, so the tofu pieces are crisp and caramelized on 4 sides, at least.
  • Remove from flame and enjoy tossed in a salad or bowl or as a dish at a leisurely dinner.
