This past Friday I came home to waterworks! The incoming pipe to the water heater in my house had busted and my dogs, Ollie and Tawny, were trying to take care of the flood all by themselves. Seeing this is the only real dog-like behavior they have exhibited in awhile, I almost didn’t want to command them to stop!
Yes, my dogs seem to be in denial that they are dogs. When my daughter and I take Tawny and Ollie to the dog park, they stay by our sides, and when a dog tries to sniff them out, they hide behind us. When we take them to the vets, they sheepishly get up on the seats designated for dog owners and look away when the vet comes in. And, forget about trying to play fetch! They are great at walking and running alongside us for miles. But – playing fetch is another story.
Our younger dog, Ollie, wasn’t quite so bad when we first brought him home. At just 6 weeks, he would play fetch and join his sister in trying to snack on all the broccoli and apple slices I would toss them. But, as he’s gotten older, trying to play fetch with him is like trying to get my teen daughter to wake up before 7 am on the weekends. When I throw the ball-n-sock I used to use with him when he was little, he looks at it and then at me, and decides to take a nap with his sister! While, I find myself playing fetch – with myself!
Recently when I was perusing the Dog food and treat aisles at Target during my lunch break, I came across Purina Beyond White Meat Chicken Cutlets Natural Dog Snacks. As they had Chicken listed as the #1 ingredient, and there were no grains, corn, wheat, soy, or artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives listed; I figured I would bring them home and offer them as a treat alternative to the DIY treats and apples and broccoli I usually offer Tawny and Ollie.
When my dogs got a whiff of those snacks, they momentarily lost their manners – but regained them quickly and practiced being patient and letting the snacks rest on their paws till we told them they could get them. And that’s when I had the idea to use these snacks in the ball-n-sock.
And what a difference that ball with Purina Beyond Snacks made! Ollie not only chased that ball-n-sock around our back yard, but he even played tug-of-war with me! And I am so glad that a snack that I thought was just a good year-round, Natural Dog Snack is also my dog’s main motivator to keep active even during those times when we are not out running and walking.
