Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, gained independence from British rule in 1948. Referred to as The Pearl of the Indian Ocean, for its pristine beaches, timeless ruins, incredible wildlife, and gorgeous landscapes. Notable places are Sigiriya, Adam’s Peak, Yala National Park, Galle Fort, Anuradhapura, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya.

Sri Lanka is famous for cinnamon and tea. Sri Lanka was the first country in the world to have a female prime minister. In July 1960, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, won the victory in the general election and became the first woman prime minister in the world. It has the highest literacy rate in South Asia. Sri Lanka was rocked by a civil war from 1983 to 2009.

Is Sri Lankan food the same as Indian food?

While very similar, Sri Lankan food is not the same as Indian Food. Popular Sri Lankan dishes are kothu (or kottu), hoppers, kiribath (milk rice), short eats (an array of appetizers from cutlets to Sri Lankan Chinese rolls), King coconut, string hoppers, and rice and curry.
