Victor Hugo once said “People don’t lack strength, they lack will“; and, in the presence of dark chocolate, my will melts like a plastic spoon on a hot stove-top. After all, it’s dark chocolate AND it’s from a plant AND it’s full of antioxidants AND it can taste so good, I mean, this justifies my lack of will power – right?
I think my dogs harbor the same thoughts on peanut butter as I do on dark chocolate! But – wait, they also happen to harbor the same thoughts when it comes to bananas, sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli, and apples! So, when a treat is put in front of them containing all or some of those ingredients, I understand well, how hard they have to work at waiting for a taste of it. My daughter is the dog trainer in the family and she has done a fantastic job in training them and getting them to listen, most of the time.
Both of our dogs are rescues; Tawny is a Collie/Retriever mix and Ollie is a Newfie mix. And, they both seem to have stomach and skin issues. Some types of dry dog food has Tawny “regurgitating” her food. And Ollie seems to have allergic skin reactions to quite a few brands of dog food on the market, which leaves him scratching himself raw. However, feeding both of them dog food that has salmon listed as it’s #1 ingredient seems to ease their stomach and skin issues. We usually take a family trip to our neighborhood PetSmart where we can shop with Tawny and Ollie, and pick up a bag of Purina® Pro Plan® Sensitive Skin & Stomach Adult Dog Food.

Just like my daughter and I enjoy a dessert of dark chocolate, I make homemade treats for my dogs to enjoy as dessert, after their dinner Purina® Pro Plan® Dry Dog Food. One of their favorite DIY treats are these ones I make with sweet potato, banana, peanut butter, egg, and oats. It is a super simple treat that can be ready in seconds and is chock full of ingredients they drool over.
Simple • Easy • Tasty
DIY Sweet Potato & Peanut Butter Dog Treats
Step 1- Preheat Oven to 375 and wash and cut up and microwave one Sweet Potato for 5-7 minutes
Step 2- Remove Skin and mash up sweet potato
Step 3- Add a banana to the sweet potato and mix well
Step 4- Add one egg
Step 5- Add 1/4 cup peanut butter to the mix
Step 6- Add 1/4 cup oats
Step 7- Using Spoons, shape into bites (mix will be wet) and place on a greased foil lined or parchment lined baking tray
Step 8- Place treats in oven and wait 25 minutes to enjoy – but make sure they are cooled a bit first.
Treats can be stored for upto a week in the fridge.

Did you know, dogs can be allergic to peanuts? My one is allergic to chicken and causes her the worst skin irritation. I have the other on efferzol for the skin. I know how you feel with your dogs!
Tandy – I had no idea dogs could be allergic to PB – or chicken for that matter! When my older dog was a pup everytime she had an upset stomach,we used to take her to the vet, on our second trip, he told me that I should just feed her boiled chicken and rice and that would be a lot cheaper – and that’s what I have been doing for the longest time and it works like a charm! I couldn’t imagine my dogs being allergic to that!
For some reason, I had this notion that dogs don’t like peanut butter, and so I never fed my Sniffy any treat that has peanut butter in it. D’uh. I definitely have to try this to see if he’ll like it.
Joshua, another blogger mentioned that some dogs could be allergic to PB- but mine are not, in fact -they love it! One of them once managed to fish the empty PB container from out of the trash and she hid it under her bed till we were asleep. I woke up in the middle of the night to her slurping noises as she tried her best to slurp every last bit of PB out of it!!

Charlie doesn’t like sweet potatoes. Whoever heard of a dog not liking them. I told him he was weird and he said, “Pass over the liver treats and nobody gets hurt.”
