The Ultimate Sautéed Jackfruit Recipe

Let's be honest, this is not a pretty dish. In fact, I would even say it's quite unsightly.

But if you were in my kitchen with me, you would be able to smell how delicious this is. Maybe, like me, your mouth will start salivating. And, if you were in my kitchen with me, you would be able to taste this. And, maybe like me, you would find yourself polishing your plate clean with a roti, making sure to savor every last bit of this sautéed jackfruit!

Why You'll Love This Sautéed Jackfruit

  • 100% Vegan: Jackfruit is one of those plants that tend to mimic the texture and look of pulled pork. Spiced perfectly, it's a delicious plant alternative.
  • Packed with aromatic, warming spices: A blend of coriander, paprika, and turmeric provides an earthy, vibrant depth.
  • Budget-Friendly: Frozen jackfruit is a cost-effective way to bulk up your plant-based meals.
  • Quick & Easy: No long marinating times. From start to finish, this recipe takes less than 30 minutes. Sauté, spice, and serve!

Why Cook With Jackfruit?

Jackfruit is one of the most popular plant-based meat alternatives because of its naturally shreddable, meat-like texture. When seasoned well, it absorbs spices beautifully - making it ideal for tacos, wraps, stir-fries, rice bowls, sandwiches, and more.

Where to find jackfruit?

I found frozen green jackfruit packets at Cherians, which is a South Asian grocery store here in Atlanta, and at The DeKalb Farmers' Market in Decatur.

I have also come across canned green jackfruit at Trader Joe's.

Ingredients

  • Frozen jackfruit: I use frozen green jackfruit or frozen young jackfruit. Refrain from using frozen ripe jackfruit, which is sweet and will alter the taste of this dish.
  • Flavorings: A blend of coriander, smoked paprika, turmeric, cayenne (or chili powder), and cumin is what adds so much flavor to this dish. And salt and black pepper roundout the flavorings.
  • Oil: olive oil or coconut oil, or any oil you have on hand, will work.
  • Aromatics: onion and garlic add flavor and aroma.
  • Coconut milk: To combine all the ingredients together well.

How to Make Frozen Sautéed Jackfruit

  1. Sauté the Onion
Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and lightly caramelized.
  2. Add Garlic
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add Jackfruit & Spices
Add the frozen jackfruit to the pan. Toss in the coriander, smoked paprika, turmeric, cayenne, and cumin. Stir well.
  4. Cover & Cook
Reduce the heat to medium-low. Cover the pan and cook for 5 minutes, allowing the jackfruit to warm, soften, and absorb the flavors.
  5. Add Coconut Milk
Pour in the coconut milk and stir. Let it simmer uncovered for another 1-2 minutes until well combined.

Serve warm, garnished with parsley and red pepper flakes, and enjoy with a plant protein like this tofu and these vegetables.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this with ripe jackfruit?
No. This recipe does not work with fresh, ripe jackfruit. Ripe jackfruit is quite sweet, and the resulting saute would differ greatly in taste.
