Lately, when I walk into the produce section at a grocery store, aromatic fresh strawberries always seem to be on sale. And, I have a very hard time not grabbing a case or two. I come home with intentions of making strawberry marmalade, jam, strawberry crisp, strawberry cups, strawberry popsicles, or this Dubai Chocolate Strawberry cake.
But life tends to get busy. And, after grabbing a few handfuls of starwberries to snack on now and then, I find myself with an abundance of strawberries.
What can I make with an abundance of strawberries?
When I find myself with an abundance of strawberries that are on the verge of going bad, I love to make this tasty strawberry chutney recipe.
This is a simple and delicious chutney recipe that is made with just 10 ingredients. And, it is ready in 20 minutes.
What the heck is chutney?
A chutney is a versatile savory condiment. It is usually made with a vegetable or fruit that is cooked with spices, sugar (or a sweetener), and vinegar.
When I lived in Sri Lanka, a tablespoon (or three) of chutney was added as an accompaniment to a plate of rice and curry. And, we would add just a bit of chutney to each mouthful of rice and curry.
What vinegar is best for making chutney?
My favorite vinegar to use is red wine vinegar. It is relatively mild and less pungent. However, apple cider vinegar can also be used.
I am not a fan of using flavored vinegars like balsamic vinegar, as they can alter the taste of this chutney.
What is a substitute for the sugar in a chutney recipe?
I have used coconut sugar, maple syrup, and jaggery powder as substitutes for sugar in chutney recipes.
I have also used monkfruit sweetener and other zero-calorie sweeteners to make some chutney recipes. The strawberry chutney you see here is made with a zero-calorie sweetener, so I could give my mom (who is avoiding refined sugar) some.

What are the ingredients to make this easy strawberry chutney?
This chutney is made with the following 10 main ingredients:
- Fresh strawberries,
- Red onion,
- Fresh ginger,
- Zero-calorie sweetener,
- Red wine vinegar,
- Ground coriander
- Smoked paprika,
- Ground cardamom,
- Ground cinnamon, and
- Chili powder
I used some oil to saute the ingredients. I also used some salt and black pepper to season this.

Substitutions:
This recipe works best with the ingredients listed. However, here are a few substitutions that would still result in a strawberry chutney that tastes delicious.
Fresh strawberries
Instead of fresh strawberries, frozen strawberries (that have been thawed) can be used.
Red onion
Any onion would work in this recipe. I had a red onion, so I used that. But a yellow onion or a white one would work as well. In fact, a yellow onion would result in a chutney that was a bit more vibrantly colored than this one.
Zero-calorie sweetener
Brown sugar or granulated sugar could be used instead of the zero-calorie sweetener I used.
Ground coriander
If you have some cumin powder, it can be used as a substitute for the coriander.
Chili powder
Instead of chili powder, chili flakes, crushed chillies, or cayenne could be used to add a bit of heat to this chutney. You could also use some fresh chopped green chilies. However, if you prefer a milder chutney, then reduce the amount of chili powder or leave it out completely.
Instructions
Step 1: Start by peeling and finely dicing the onion and ginger.
Step 2: Then, rinse the strawberries well. Discard any discolored parts. Chop off the stems. Then, dice the strawberries finely as well.
Step 3: Add the oil to a small or medium-sized pan and place it over a stovetop set to medium heat.
Step 4: Add the peeled and diced onion and ginger, and saute them for about 5 minutes, stirring often
Step 5: Then, add in the strawberries, the spices, the zero-calorie sweetener, and the vinegar, and stir the mixture well.
Step 6: Turn the stove to low heat.
Step 7: Cover the pan with a lid and let this mixture simmer for about 10 minutes.

Step 8: Remove the lid; the liquid in the pan should have reduced at this point. Stir the strawberry chutney well, and take the pan off the stove.
Let the strawberry chutney cool. Then, place the chutney in glass jars, secure their lids tightly, and store them in the refrigerator.

How long to wait before eating chutney?
This homemade strawberry chutney can be enjoyed as soon as it is made. However, I have found that it tastes better about 2-3 days after it is made.

How to serve this strawberry chutney?
This delicious strawberry chutney is fantastic as part of a charcuterie platter with crackers and cheese.
It also makes a tasty accompaniment to a meal consisting of yellow rice, chicken curry, beetroot curry, and carrot croquettes.
This strawberry chutney is also delicious slathered on roasted meats, veggies, and tofu.
My favorite way to enjoy this strawberry chutney lately is to add it to avocado toast!
How to store this strawberry chutney?
This homemade chutney can be stored in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for 3 weeks or so.
