I love desserts. Especially chocolate desserts. In my dreams, I eat desserts (like this 3-ingredient chocolate mousse and this chocolate roll cake) for AND after every meal.
But, in reality, I do try to balance out my love for desserts by indulging in healthy treats, like these chocolate squash bars and this healthy Chocolate Avocado Pudding about 80% of the time.
I have been enjoying avocado pudding since I was a toddler. Before I could make it, my mom fed me a concoction of mashed ripe avocados with coconut milk and sugar before the Kardashians made it a thing.
These days I have doctored up that simple 3-ingredient avocado pudding by adding in some lemon juice to preserve that natural vibrant green color of avocados so I can chill it and enjoy it over a few days.
And, now and then, when that chocolate craving hits, I doctor up that avocado pudding a bit more. I do this by adding unsweetened cocoa powder, cinnamon, and some vanilla extract to make this chocolate avocado pudding recipe that tastes delicious and satisfies my cravings!
I love this Chocolate Avocado Pudding as it:
- Packed with delicious rich chocolate flavor,
- Full of healthy fats and low in carbs,
- Versatile (it can be made with a variety of milk options as well as sweeteners and adapted to suit many dietary preferences)
- So quick to make with a total time being less than 5 minutes,
- Dairy-free,
- Gluten-free, and
- An all-round healthy dessert
What are the ingredients needed to make chocolate avocado pudding?
You will need the following 6 ingredients:
- Ripe avocados
- Cocoa powder
- Sweetener
- Dairy-free milk
- Ground cinnamon
- Pure vanilla extract
Substitutions and Adaptations
- Ripe avocados
I used ripe avocados that were firm yet soft. I know that seems conflicting, but when I pick avocados to make this pudding, I try to get those that are not too soft. In other words, I try not to pick the ones that give in when I press my fingers into them. Instead, I try to use those that give in just a slight bit when pressed. Hopefully, I haven’t confused you too much.
- Cocoa powder
For this pudding, I like to use unsweetened cocoa powder or Dutch process cocoa powder. You could also use cacao powder instead.
- Sweetener
When I make this sweetener for my boyfriend and myself, I use Monkfruit sweetener, or a zero-sugar powdered sweetener, or a sugar-free liquid sweetener like liquid stevia. Using a zero-sugar sweetener makes this a keto-friendly pudding that kids, as well as adults, are sure to enjoy. However, when I make this avocado chocolate pudding recipe just for myself, I use granulated sugar, maple syrup, or honey.
- Dairy-free milk
My first dairy-free milk option for this chocolate pudding is coconut milk. Full fat coconut milk gives this pudding such an amazing creamy texture. And, to me, the coconut flavor is not overwhelming at all. I have also made this recipe with almond milk, oat milk, and soy milk and both work just as well. In the pictures you see here in this post, I used almond milk.
- Ground cinnamon This is an optional ingredient. I like to add a bit of cinnamon to this pudding recipe as the cinnamon seems to tone down that slightly bitter taste that unsweetened cocoa powder seems to have.
- Pure vanilla extract I use pure vanilla extract to enhance the chocolate flavor. It can be left out, but it just works so well in this treat.
Instructions
- This chocolate avocado pudding recipe is such an easy and quick one to make.
- The only prep involved is to cut the avocados, remove the seeds out of the center, and scoop up the avocado flesh into a blender or food processor.
- Then, add the almond milk/coconut milk, unsweetened cocoa powder, sweetener, cinnamon, and pure vanilla extract into the blender/food processor and blend until smooth.
- Divide this pudding between two serving bowls. This pudding can be enjoyed at room temperature as soon as it is made. Or, it can be chilled for a couple of hours in the fridge and enjoyed topped with some whipped coconut cream, raspberries, and/or chocolate shavings.
Can you make this chocolate avocado pudding ahead of time?
Yes, this vegan keto pudding can be made a day or two in advance and stored in the refrigerator until you are ready to enjoy it.
How long does chocolate avocado pudding last?
If you happen to double or triple this recipe and have leftovers, the leftover pudding should last about 1-3 days. I have not had leftovers of this pudding last longer before someone eats it all up.
Can you use bananas instead of avocado?
I am assuming avocados can be subbed out with bananas. But, I have not tried making a chocolate banana pudding. However, this recipe has a 5.0 rating and is worth checking out.
