Lentil Cheese Burgers
Coriander, cumin, and smoked paprika add a tasty spin to these easy, gluten free lentil cheese burgers. Enjoy them with a light salad or on lettuce leaves or a bun with all the fixings.
“Comfort food” – those two words can conjure up thoughts of so many different belly-rumbling pleasures for each of us. This evening, a chap from a tree service company I have used in the past, came over to give me an estimate for cutting down and hauling away a very large -and dying- tree in my back yard.
When he realized I was a repeat customer, he dropped his advertised price down by a $100; and when we got around to talking about food; comfort food to be exact; he offered to drop his price down another $100 for some homemade biscuits for him and his crew!
Whether it be biscuits, or chicken pot pie or chicken and dumplings or pizza or mac and cheese, we each have that food that takes gets us reminiscing while making us feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
My comfort food these days is lentils. Growing up, lentil curry used to be a staple on our table no matter what the occasion or circumstance might have been. My mom has always been an expert lentil -or dhal- curry maker; to this day, I’ve never quite had lentil curry like she makes it!
While I adore lentil curry – I adore lentils more. To me, lentils are so incredibly versatile – easily absorbing the flavors of what they are surrounded by while adding a nutritional punch to whatever they are in, whether that be pancakes or soups or stews.
This past week has been kinda crazy and I have found solace in comforting lentils in a wide variety of ways; so, when I received a sample of creamy, dill flavored Castello Havarti cheese, I figured I would try combining it with lentils to make a veggie burger. I wasn’t sure how the cheese would hold up with the lentils – I was expecting it to melt and ooze out. As I kept things pretty simple – just lentils, cheese, spices, eggs and onion, I wasn’t sure if these little burgers would pass my daughter’s taste-test.
We love these lentil cheese burgers!
But, surprisingly, these little nibblers were super tasty (or they wouldn’t have made it on here) and, they were oh so comforting -and, no cheese oozed out in the process! My daughter came up with a perfectly complimenting sauce for these Lentil Cheese Burgers – a simple mix of yogurt, wasabi, ketchup and lime – sounds weird – but, it tasted so darn good with these burgers.

I have to make these! I must make these burgers, they look simply divine! They crumble so well under your fork… Great recipe Shashi!
Daniela – yes – yes, you have to make these! 🙂
Thanks so much – please let me know if you do?
I love a lentil burger but never thought to add cheese. This would be my comfort food too!
Thank you so much Marissa!
Dude! I am seriously digging that Havarti Dill. And what a genius idea to put it in a burger…and a lentil burger at that. These burgers just blew my mind, Shashi! We must both be feeling the Spring vibe lately since we both posted burgers on the same day. Haha! Bring on the sunshine…the winter was wayyy too long this year! Also, bring on a plate of these lentil burgers. Thanks!
Duuude – guess what?! It was 71 degrees here on Sunday – and it’s been in the high 60’s and 70’s since – oh heck yeah – am ready for spring and a scorching summer! Thanks btw.
I was drooling over my keyboard at your burgers earlier – bacon is kinda off limits till April and when something is off limits, well, that’s when the cravings hit!
I’ve been dying to try that cheese and of course, it’s perfect with your recipe creations! LENTILS!!
Thanks oodles my friend! Lentils are so so yum!
This looks so yummy! Definitely pinning for later!
Thanks so much Elizabeth!
I love that lentil cheeseburgers are your comfort food. I SO wish I could say that. 🙂 My comfort food must come from my mother so we’ll just blame her. These burgers do look really good.
Thanks Maureen! Happy Anniversary btw. Funny how we seem to crave comfort from foods we were exposed to when we were young…I tried rebelling -foodwise, but alas, my rebellious choices just didn’t stick long! 🙂
YUM! When I think comfort food, I immediately think home cooked Indian food or Mac and Cheese. Weird, right? These sound delicious and the perfect cure to a boring black bean burger.
Hey not weird at all – unless they were eaten together! 🙂
LOL I love that you negotiate your tree removal with food! I’ll have to try that next time! Yet another healthy weeknight meal! These burgers sound awesome!
Thanks Lindsey!Haha – actually, I was just running my mouth and he was the one who was like “ummm, throw in some biscuits and I will take off another $100” and I laughed and he didn’t! So game on – they are coming out Monday and they will get biscuits! 🙂
I’m not sure that i would consider lentils alone comfort food…but paired with cheese – uh, YES! These burgers sound delicious!
Thanks Joanne – my mom makes this tempered lentil curry – it’s supposed to be eaten with naan or rice – but I love to eat it like soup – that’s one instant when I could eat a whole pan of lentils by themselves – if you are ever in Atlanta – I might share some of this curry with you… or maybe the next Leftovers club we are paired up….
Lentils are a great comfort food, and these burgers look fantastic! My comfort food might have to be pizza… ugh, I love it so much, especially when I’m too lazy to make dinner 😛
Haha – my daughter loves pizza too – last year after her bday party, I had like 3 pizzas leftover even after I gave some away and I thought she would be sick of pizza – but when the stash disappeared, she asked me if we could make more pizza!!! GAH!!!
Thanks Erin!
Wish I had found this recipe yesterday before I made veggie burgers. I’m going to have to try this next time.
Thanks so much Katherine! If you remember I would love to know what you though of them if/when you make them….
Loving your spices in here a perfect little vegetarian burger option. Sharing, of course!
Thanks so much Bobbie!
Lentils Shashi, you know I love them too 🙂
This is a great, simple, veggie burger recipe and I love the spices you’ve used. Another winner! 😀
Thanks so much Neil! I know you love them too – they are pretty darn epic huh?! 🙂
Very healthy and delicious! I have always been a lentil fan. A fantastic recipe, Shashi.
Thanks so much Angie!
These sound delicious and I bet they make great leftovers too!
Thanks so much Chris – and you are so right! We managed to save a couple for the next day and they were just as good – not as crumbly on the second day either!
you and my hubby would be BFFS. He grew up in Nepal, so dahl was basically his bread and butter. I can’t say that I have ever had burger-fied lentils, but I SO want to try this! Anything with Havarti is my jam! Pinning!
He must be my brother from another mother -and father! Dhal/daal (as many different ways to say it as there are ways to cook it) was my bread and butter growing up too – a new year party – there was dhal curry, birthday – dhal curry, funeral – dhal curry, Sunday morning – dhal curry, money is tight – dhal curry … you get it right…?
Thanks lady!
